We are excited to announce our first ever Commission Contest, where users will compose for a specific ensemble and help create valuable repertoire for a unique combination of instruments.
Meet Violet, a duo of Viola (Dr. Katrin Meidell) and Clarinet (Dr. Elizabeth Crawford). This beautiful combination of instruments allows for a large range of compositional techniques, but lacks repertoire. After hearing Violet perform at the 2016 College Music Society Conference, we immediately knew this ensemble was special and that this is the perfect opportunity for our Noteflight community!
Noteflight and Violet have partnered on a commission contest, and invite you to compose a piece for this ensemble. To help get you started, Violet has provided the introductory video below. In it, Libby and Katrin talk about the specific and unique characteristics of their instruments and demonstrate some fun extended techniques.
Composition Length: Compose a 6-12 minute piece of music for Viola and Clarinet. This is an acoustic duet; no backing tracks or electronic sounds please.
Due Date: March 31, 2017 by Midnight EST.
Judging: Compositions will be judged by a panel of professional composers, and the winner will be selected by Violet. The winner will be announced by April 30, 2017.
Prize: Winner will receive $500, a video-recorded live performance of their work by Violet, and the opportunity to publish their commissioned work. While there is only one winner, Violet may select other works for public performance and inclusion in their repertoire library, with the potential of getting published.
Ownership: The composer retains all copyright and rights ownership to their work. However, by submitting for this competition you agree to allow Violet to perform your work and Noteflight to promote your work as part of this contest.
Submission: Submit your Noteflight Score using the form below, and be sure to set sharing privileges in the connect panel to “All site members” and “Anyone with a link can view.”
